How do I get to Friday Harbor?

Friday Harbor is on San Juan Island, Washington. It can be reached by Ferry from Anacortes, an 80 mile (1.5- 2-hour) drive north of Seattle. Take the Burlington/Anacortes exit off I-5, north of Mount Vernon. If you bring your car to Friday Harbor, be sure to arrive at the ferry terminal at least an hour in advance of sailing time, 1.5 hours on evenings and weekends. The Washington State Ferry toll-free number within Washington state is: 1-800-84-FERRY, and out of state is: 206-464-6400. The Washington State Ferry schedule can be found on the internet at:

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/current/index.cfm?route=ana-sj&direction=west

Please check the footnotes - some ferries are Friday or Saturday only, or every day except Friday or Saturday.

The ferry docks in the center of town, about 1 mile from the labs. To get to the labs, follow the main road (Guard St.) into town, and turn right at Tucker Ave. Follow Tucker Ave. about 0.5 km to a right turn at University Road. The Labs are at 620 University Road. There is no public transportation on the Island. The distance between the labs and town is approximately a mile and a half (a long, but pleasant, walk). There is very limited parking on campus for automobiles. There is taxi service and it is also possible to row a Labs boat to town.

Further travel information:

If you are flying through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac), you can arrange a connecting flight via Kenmore Airlines (see below). Alternatively you can take the "Airporter Shuttle" van from Sea-Tac to the Anacortes ferry landing. The airport is about 2 miles from the Friday Harbor Labs. The seaplane float is near the ferry landing in the town of Friday Harbor, about 1 mile from FHL. There is taxi and small bus service from the airport and the town, but you can often get a ride from someone by just asking.

Kenmore Air (1-800-543-9595 or www.kenmoreair.com) flies both from Boeing Field to the Friday Harbor airport and from Lake Union in downtown Seattle to the seaplane float in Friday Harbor. Ground transport from Sea-Tac to both sites is included in the price of your ticket and scheduled by the airline. If you use this option, you’ll need to allow ample time (several hours to be safe) to travel between Sea Tac and the Kenmore terminals. Call Kenmore Air or visit the website for details.

The Sea-Tac Anacortes Airporter provides van service from Sea-Tac Airport to the ferry terminal in Anacortes. The cost is approximately $35 one way. Call 1-866-235-5247 for reservations. Board the ferry as a walk-on passenger. The labs are located 1.5 miles (20-30 minute walk) from the ferry terminal or you can call San Juan Taxi at 360-378-3550.
